| Description |
Working for Families (WFF) is designed to support vulnerable or disadvantaged parents towards, into or within employment by breaking down childcare or other barriers. It underpins the Scottish Government commitment to tackling child poverty. WFF also aims to tackle additional employability barriers such as; low skills, lack of confidence, transport, debts, substance misuse issues, and other care responsibilities. The target groups for the initiative are: ? Lone parents ? Parents on low income ? Parents with other stresses in the household which make it difficult to sustain employment, including disability, mental health, family break-up and drug and alcohol problems Services Offered: o Employability Support Team - responsible for the administration of WFF and also deal directly with many clients and signpost them to an appropriate Link Worker or for specialist help o Link workers - central to WFF with roles as recruiters, providers of guidance and advice, signposting clients to relevant employment, education and training opportunities. Link Workers have specialist areas of expertise including: young parents, lone parents, ethnic minorities, substance misuse issues, and criminal conviction issues o Money Advice Support - provide a range of services including; benefit checks, better off calculations, debt advice, budgeting advice, income maximisation advice, advocacy with debtors, and financial education sessions o Access to Childcare - through several routes: Childminders, Home-based care, crèches, and nurseries. Where requested WFF staff can assist clients in finding suitable childcare to enable access to work, education or training o Training & Education - WFF provides a range of opportunities to improve skills and employability o ICT Training. o Dundee College - provide a range of career focussed taster courses o Financial Assistance - many WFF clients are eligible for assistance from one of the WFF client funds o Childcare Subsidy Fund - provides assistance to clients who are starting work and need help o Barrier Free Fund - this can help clients with non-childcare related expenses Services are provided by staff in a range of agencies: Dundee City Council (Economic Development, Leisure & Communities, Welfare Rights, and Social Work), One Parent Families Scotland, APEX Scotland and Dundee College. People can be referred by agencies they already engage with or can self refer via the above contact details Where WFF is unable to help directly, staff have built up a network of contacts to which clients are referred for additional assistance. |
